THREE YEARS ON, BATANG KALI LANDSLIDE STILL HAUNTS RESCUER
HULU SELANGOR: Three years after the Batang Kali landslide tragedy, the haunting images of that night still linger in the mind of Malaysia Civil Defence Force (APM) officer Captain (CD) Hilmi Husman.
Working in near-total darkness, illuminated only by rescuers' flashlights, Hilmi recalled discovering the body of a child buried beneath the debris, still wrapped in a blanket.
Not far from the spot, he also came across the bodies of two family members found embracing each other, as if trying to shield one another in their final moments.
The discoveries were among the most painful moments for Hilmi, who was the Hulu Selangor district civil defence officer when the landslide struck the Father's Organic Farm campsite in Batang Kali on Dec 16, 2022.
"It is the most difficult experience I have ever gone through. It still plays in my mind to this day," he said.
"Initial reports indicated that nearly 100 people were involved. The figure was shocking and immediately showed how serious the situation was," he said.
Arriving at the scene, he described the conditions as pitch-black and filled with uncertainty, adding that the incident marked the first major disaster he had ever handled.
As the APM operations commander and secretariat of the District Disaster Management Committee, Hilmi remained at the site throughout the nine-day search and rescue (SAR) operation.
